Double Degree Programs

Overview

A double degree program is a pathway between two existing undergraduate degree programs, allowing students to complete the requirements for two different undergraduate degrees in a compressed time frame. The learning outcomes of both degree programs are unchanged. Unlike a double major, a double degree leads to the conferral of two undergraduate degrees.

Double degrees may be founded on an agreement between the parties if two different divisions participate. The VPAP Office has a template which includes all relevant issues to be addressed.

Please note that double degree programs are not developed by, or at the request of, individual students. Double degree programs are established through a proposal that has been initiated and developed at a Faculty or division and approved through governance. At this time there are three double degrees at the University of Toronto. All are offered at the University of Toronto Scarborough. See the UTSC Academic Calendar for more information.

Creating a New Double Degree Program

A new double degree program is considered a major modification under the University of Toronto Quality Assurance Process (UTQAP). As such, a proposal for a new double degree should be developed in close consultation with the lead Faculty Dean’s Office and the VPAP Office. New double degree proposals must include two existing, approved U of T degree programs.

Modifying a Double Degree Program

Academic changes to an existing double degree program may occur when:

• one or both of the degree programs have program requirement changes, or
• admission and program requirement changes may be proposed to the double degree program specifically.

In all cases of proposed modifications to a double degree, both units and divisions involved in the combination must be consulted and both must approve the modification.

Proposed changes may fall into the category of major modifications or minor modifications. Please consult your Dean’s Office on the nature of any proposed changes.

Starting a Cyclical Review of a Double Degree Program

Each double degree program should be reviewed in conjunction with the scheduled review of each of the degree programs in the combination. When a degree program under review is also part of a double degree, the self-study and terms of reference should include all participating double degrees for that degree program.
